Chapter twenty-three

Chapter 20

Their week flew by. The weather was not brilliant with April showers dogging their steps, but they cared not. They had an excellent meal at the White House on Tuesday and walked the beaches when the weather wasn’t too wet and visited Lulworth Castle, had a day in Bridport and took in the ancient mysteries of Tutankhamun and the Terracotta Army. On Thursday, they visited Sherbourne Abbey and would have liked to do the archaeological trails, but the weather was against them.

Finally, on Friday, they reluctantly took the keys back to Mrs. Bethel and returned to Great Bookham. They were a little quiet on the way back, but they were happy.

When they got home, Marta was just finishing, and she smiled and hugged Anna, which rather took her by surprise. They disembarked their gear from the car and had a coffee.

“You know, I never called Josie to say I was going away. Still, no harm was done. I’ll call her Monday just for an update.”

“How long are you staying for?”

“How long do you want me to?”

“Forever?”

She smiled at him, and she would like the same thing, but she wasn’t there yet, but hoped she would be, that he would be.

“Dunno. A couple more weeks, maybe? Besides.”

He looked up at her.

“Besides what?”

“I have work to do. My project, now that I’m not working.”

“Brought your laptop?”

“Ah, good point. Can I use your PC?”

“Everything in this house is yours, sweetheart. Everything.”

She had thought about starting it on Monday but felt like she ought to earn her keep, not that it made any sense, just that she wanted to be useful. So far, he had whisked away her into the flash world in affluent Surrey, had a lovely holiday by the coast and she needed a bit of grounding to bring her back to a new form of normality. She would also look for a job down here and, if successful, it would decide her fate.

She would only do a couple of hour’s work and started by re-inventing the spreadsheet which she had started and put in order the files which she would cross check with Amjad’s disk. Arthur gave her the key and passwords once more and she entered the study again. The folders she had left on one side were at a slight angle and she re-set them in the position she had left them nearly a month earlier. Marta had no doubt disturbed them, but the desktop was a little dusty. Part-time work by the housekeeper had to have some omissions. Anna opened the top drawer and rummaged about but could not find Amjad’s disk anywhere. Where was it? She went to find Artie, who was reading in the conservatory.

“Have you seen Amjad’s disk?”

“Disk? No. Didn’t you take it back up north with some files?”

She shook her head.

“Don’t think so. I copied it on a memory stick so had no need.”

“So, take it off the memory stick.”

“Ha, now that is back…at Shannon’s.”

She glanced at her watch. Her daughter would be home by now.
